Wisła Kraków in the relegation zone. The devastating ‘table of shame’

Before the season, Wisła Kraków was mentioned among the main contenders for promotion to the PKO Ekstraklasa. Ultimately, it took only tenth place in the Fortuna 1st League. This result is a big disappointment for the fans of “White Star”. The Krakow team made things very difficult for themselves with their performances in April and May. During this period, their results were at the level of this year’s losers.

Wisła Kraków must postpone plans to return to the top league until later. Although it was in the play-off game until the last round, it lost to Bruk-Bet Termalika Nieciecza 0-2. The results of the last series of games were such that even a victory against the “Słoniki” would not give the Krakow team the play-offs. Therefore, we need to look at the disaster a bit more broadly.

Wisła was one of the worst teams at the end of the season

The results from the last two months can say a lot about Wisła’s form . After the March national team training camps, “Biała Gwiazda” experienced a significant drop in form in the league . The exception was the Polish Cup, in which Wisła ultimately triumphed, but they will not be awarded promotion for winning the competition.

The last ten matches in the Fortuna 1. League have been a series of failures for “White Star”. It started with an away defeat against Chrobry Głogów 2:3 on March 30. Later, Motor Lublin took all the points from Krakow. In the next round, the Krakow team drew with Wisła Płock.

The first victory in April took place in Pruszków, where Wisła won against Znicz 3:2, although they were losing 0:2 until the 52nd minute. It seemed that from that moment on, the Wisła players would start to improve their results in the league. It is true that they did not lose the next three matches, but they still could not talk about satisfaction. They defeated Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała, but drew with other relegated teams – Resovia and Zagłębie Sosnowiec.

The last three matches were a disaster for “White Star”. She suffered three consecutive defeats. First with Lechia Gdańsk after a crazy match that ended with the score 3:4. Later, it was defeated by another directly promoted team, GKS Katowice, 2:5. In the end, she lost to Nieciecza. As a result, she took tenth place with 50 points.

The results at the end of the season say a lot, and the table for the last ten games says even more. Wisła’s decline in form has made it the third worst team in the Fortuna 1st League over the last two months. During this time, it scored only nine points, as many as Resovia. At that time, Podbeskidzie (five points) and Zagłębie (three points) scored worse. Wisła played at the relegation level at the end of the season.

“I am surprised by the surprise of some that Wisła Kraków did not make the play-offs. The facts are that after the March break for the national team, Wisła started playing like a relegated player from the 1st League. And if we subtracted the goals from added time, often scored by Rodado’s willpower, it would still be more interesting,” Piotr Majchrzak noted on Twitter.

Even though Wisła had the fifth most effective attack in Fortuna 1. Liga after the March national team matches (17 goals), the defense was very bad . Wisła lost 24 goals, the most of all teams.

Of the teams that fought for the play-offs, GKS Tychy looked equally weak at that time, scoring only one point more than Wisła. He finished directly ahead of the Krakow team in the table. Two points behind “White Star” in the table at the end of the season was Stal Mielec, the second best team in April and May (22 points). Only GKS Katowice scored better than the team from Podkarpacie (23 points).

Wisła must postpone the implementation of its plans and dreams for at least another year. It is possible that there will be a personnel revolution in Krakow this summer

Will Wisła Kraków advance to the PKO Ekstraklasa next season?
