The famous Polish club is reborn in great style after relegation. 130 goals in 29 matches!

When Wigry Suwałki reached the semi-finals of the Polish Cup in the 2016/17 season, and a year later they took sixth place in the first league, no one could have expected that their situation would be dramatic. Two years ago, the club declared bankruptcy and due to financial problems it was relegated to the 4th league. Now he is close to promotion, and his statistics are stunning. The key player is the former Polish representative, who is also… the club’s sports director.

On April 4, 2017, Wigry Suwałki defeated Arka Gdynia away in the semi-final of the Polish Cup 4:2 and almost made up for the loss from the first match, when they lost 0:3. The first team of the team led by coach Dominik Nowak included, among others: current defender of Legia Warszawa Rafał Augustyniak, Damian Kądzior and Kamil Zapolnik, who is now causing quite a sensation in Puszcza Niepołomice. Shortly thereafter, under the leadership of Artur Skowronek, Wigry took sixth place in the first league and was close to promotion to the top league, as they were six points behind Zagłębie Sosnowiec, who was in second place .

That period was the best in the club’s history, but it did not last long. In the 2019/20 season, Wigry fell brutally to the 2nd league , taking last place in the table with only 26 points. Even though they had a chance to advance through the play-offs in the next season, they were eliminated by KKS Kalisz. The same story repeated itself a year later, but this time their defeat was Motor Lublin. The club did not participate in the next competition and its authorities declared bankruptcy.

A distinguished club is rising from its knees. Wigry Suwałki has already scored 130 goals this season

Wigry started last season in the 4th Podlasie league and ended it in fourth place. – They [the players] have the potential to play at least one league level higher. I don’t need another penny. I would like to maintain what we have so far. I think that for this amount you can build a team that will advance to the third league – said president Łukasz Jutkiewicz recently .

The current competition looks definitely different. Wigry started the season with five wins in a row, and now, less than a month until the end of the competition, they are the leader of the table with 78 points. The second team, KS Wasilków, also has the same number, with whom they recently won 3:1. In the fall, the result was a draw of 5:5. Paweł Cimochowski’s players  are extremely effective this season, as they scored 130 goals in 29 games, conceding only 29. They have very effective weapons prepared. “Our leader of the 4th league is impressive in the spring after set pieces,” the website suwalki24.pl reported.

Wigry Suwałki are fighting for double success. Maciej Makuszewski became sports director

If that wasn’t enough, on Thursday Wigry defeated Ruch Wysokie Mazowieckie in the semi-final of the Podlasie Polish Cup by 7-0 and on June 12 they will play the final against third-league Olimpia Zambrów at their own stadium. The full match was played by, among others, former Polish representative Maciej Makuszewski, who returned to Suwałki in August after 13 years, and apart from playing,  he was entrusted with another function.

“He feels able to play even in the top league, but he resigned from the contract in the distant Opole for family reasons. His wife and small children live in Białystok, and by continuing his career in Suwałki, he will spend much, much more time with his loved ones than before. Maciej will play the role of Sports Director in our club,” it was reported on the official website.

There are five rounds left until the end of the IV league games. Wigry will play their next match on Saturday, May 25, when they will face Czarni Czarna Białostocka at home. The games will end on the weekend of June 15-16 with a confrontation with Sparta 1951 Szepietowo.

Will Wigry Suwałki advance to the 3rd league?
